The Sanctuary ot the Madonna of Carmine or 'Ciavanis'

Santuario Madonna del Carmine

This Sanctuary is the one found at the highest altitude in the Lanzo Valleys. In fact it is at 1874 meters above sea level on a grassy terrace from which there is an impressive view over all the Val Grande.
The isolated position and the numerous legends related to this area confirm the ancient origins of this spot for pastoral meetings but, above all, as a place for devotional practices dating back to pre- Christian cults.
The humble building dates back to the 18th century.
The architectural structure is very simple: a central door flanked by two small windows and with a round one above it. On the outside there is a small bell tower while the roof also covers some functional rooms.
Inside there is just one altar and a statue of the Madonna of Carmine in a niche, the recent work of a local artist.
About seventy ancient votive objects are kept in the sanctuary, witness to the intense and constant expression of faith towards this place.
